GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The Mesa County school district is looking at cutting 42 positions, defunding two schools and possibly eliminating summer education to cut nearly $5 million in spending.
The Daily Sentinel in Grand Junction reports that School District 51 officials unveiled the proposed budget cuts Monday. Some of the job cuts might come from attrition because the district expects to have 80 open teaching positions next year.
Students could also see athletic fees increase from $70 to $110 in high school and from $30 to $50 at the middle school level.
Schools across Colorado are slashing next year’s budgets because the state is reducing education funding to help cover a half-billion-dollar shortfall.
