CHSAA

The name game

The second of two annual Colorado High School Activities Association board of control meetings will be today at the Red Lion Hotel-Denver Southeast in Aurora.

As usual, the agenda is the lesser of the two during the school year in dealing with issues, but a number of administrative reports will be heard.

The names of the board of control and executive committee will be changed to legislative council and board of directors, respectively, to better reflect the activities they oversee.

Increased time on the committee that works with the state legislature, bringing requirements in line for coaches who aren’t teachers, adding representatives for the Colorado Athletic Directors Association to the board of control and increasing jurisdiction for event officials after the event is completed also will be heard as proposals.

For sports committees, baseball will consider adding a play-in game for Class 5A districts; basketball seeks a 22-team regional format for 1A; Mountain Vista and Resurrection Christian will add ice hockey teams (and that sport’s final rounds will be contested at the University of Denver in 2012); the Western Slope League seeks its own qualifying system for state soccer entrants; and swimming is after a four-year rotation system that includes Mesa State in Grand Junction, beginning with the 4A state meet for next month’s championships.

Centennial power

State this — the Class 5A Centennial once again is very competitive.

A big game with an eye toward postseason qualification will be after school today, when Mullen visits Smoky Hill.

A 5A Continental matchup to watch will Heritage at Highlands Ranch on Friday, the same day East will host Thomas Jefferson in the 5A-4A Denver Prep, a game that will also include cancer awareness. All proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

On Saturday, don’t miss Wheat Ridge at Golden in 4A Jefferson County.
