A 79-year-old was stopped by Denver police Thursday afternoon after they received a complaint that he was pulling up campaign signs on private property and putting them into a van.
Police stopped a van driven by Victor Anaya near West 19th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, where they found multiple signs piled in the van.
“Authorities seized the vehicle, as well as the signs,” said Sonny Jackson, a spokesman for the Denver Police Department.
Anaya initially told authorities that he was paid $20 to pull up the signs.
In an interview Friday, he said he wasn’t paid by anyone, Jackson said.
Anaya is scheduled to appear in court next month for a misdemeanor theft charge.
A supporter for Larry Ambrose, a District 1 City Council candidate, spotted Anaya pulling up Ambrose’s signs and called police.
