Two Denver Post business reporters have won national awards for their work during 2010.
David Migoya was recognized by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in the feature writing category.
His “High-End Hustle” told the story of a Denver businessman who solicited investors to his vacation club by offering unbeatable prices to exotic locales. When the economy tanked, exposing the flaws in the business model, the club went bust, and hundreds of investors lost money.
“Great shoe-leather reporting on an investment scheme gone bust,” the judges said.
The two other winners in the 200,000- 500,000 circulation category were from The Boston Globe and Seattle Times.
Business reporter Mark Jaffe and photographer Andy Cross took third place in the annual Best of The West competition between newspapers in 14 Western states.
They won for “Point Hope, Alaska: Gulf Spill Inflames Arctic Feud,” a package that looked at how oil drilling in the Arctic was delayed by the BP disaster, worsening fears of Alaskans whose livelihood is the sea.
“Hooray for the Denver Post for investing serious time and money in telling this story,” the judge wrote.
Other newspapers competing in the Best of the West contest include the Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times and The Oregonian in Portland, Ore.
