Eight landowners in the area burned by the Fourmile Fire are in danger of missing a deadline set by Boulder County for removing the charred debris on their properties.

On April 5, the county sent a letter to landowners whose properties are in high-hazard areas — where a strong summer rainstorm could wash the scorched soil and remaining debris downstream in a muddy landslide — informing them of a May 2 deadline for debris removal.

Leif Steiner, who lost his home on Melvina Hill Road in the September blaze, is one of the property owners in danger of missing the deadline. He said he doesn’t want to remove structural components, such as the foundation, until he knows whether they can be reused when he rebuilds — but he doesn’t know yet what kind of house he wants to rebuild.
