ARLINGTON, Texas — Exactly two weeks after breaking his upper right arm diving headfirst into home plate at Detroit, reigning AL MVP Josh Hamilton went through a workout that included catching flyballs, throwing and running the bases Tuesday.
“Today is the best I’ve felt as far as my pain since I’ve been hurt,” the Rangers slugger said.
Hamilton is taking some one-armed swings off a tee using his left arm, but isn’t ready to say when he expects to be able to swing freely with both arms. He sounded like it might be sooner than the original timeframe of a month, but there would still be considerable pain now extending the right arm with a full swing.
Phillies lose Contreras
PHOENIX — Phillies closer Jose Contreras has a grade 1 strain in his right elbow and will be out three to four weeks.
Mauer not quite ready
MINNEAPOLIS — Twins catcher Joe Mauer will be eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday, but general manager Bill Smith said he doesn’t think Mauer will be healthy enough for that to happen.
Smith said Mauer lost about a week of rehab time because of a nasty bout of the flu that circulated through the clubhouse.
Footnotes.
An MRI taken on Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco’s right elbow showed no structural damage, and there’s still a chance he won’t have to miss his next scheduled start Saturday against the Tigers.
