EDGEWATER — Police said a window was shot out of a portable classroom at Jefferson High School on Wednesday morning. A teacher was working in the classroom but was not injured, school officials said.
“I’m sure she was shaken up, but she’s not hurt,” said Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman Melissa Reeves.
Edgewater police spokesman Steve Davis said the teacher dropped to the floor, crawled away from the window and called 911. Her name was not released.
A report of a shot being fired was received at 8:47 a.m., Davis said.
Davis said the bullet entered the window about 5 feet above the ground and lodged in the wall opposite the window. The shot entered less than 2 feet from where the teacher had been sitting at her desk.
Police have not determined what type of weapon fired the bullet.
Only about 200 students were on campus Wednesday. They were juniors and some sophomores taking the ACT, Reeves said.
Several other students were meeting at the school for a class field trip to the Jefferson County courthouse, which was canceled after the school was locked down.
“This could have been a lot more dangerous if there were kids in there,” Davis said.
Ian Gibson, 17, was taking the ACT when he realized that something was going on.
“The walkie-talkies started going crazy,” Gibson said. “I just heard that somebody had shot something in the temps (temporary buildings) and that the teacher almost got hit.”
Students were allowed to complete their ACTs and then were sent home, and the school was closed for the rest of the day.
District spokeswoman Lynn Setzer said the school will be open today.
