GREELEY, Colo.—Greeley city officials are waiting to hear from federal wildlife officials about whether construction work caused dozens of great blue herons to abandon their nests.

One thing is clear—the birds that had attracted numerous observers are gone. The huge birds left a wooded area along the Cache la Poudre (kash-luh-POO’-der) River in north Greeley last week when construction crews moved in.

The Greeley Tribune reports the crews were working on an irrigation canal and the city is the majority owner of the irrigation company that sent the crews. The work has stopped.

The Tribune says state and federal officials toured the area Wednesday to determine whether active nests were disturbed but decided the trees are too fragile to climb right now. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act could apply.
