Pinch-hitter Sean Reeves capped a nine-run ninth inning with his first hit of the season, a three-run homer, as Metro State rallied to an 11-8 victory over Colorado Mines in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball game Sunday in Denver. Trailing 8-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, eight consecutive batters reached base before Mines pitcher Brent Payne recorded the first out of the inning.
In his 20th career appearance, senior Joey Widhalm (1-0) entered the game in the ninth inning to earn his first career win in the final regular-season home game of his career. Payne took the loss for the Orediggers, dropping to 2-1. Mines’ Jordan Williams hit a grand slam in the seventh, one of his two hits.
The Roadrunners improved to 28-12, 24-11 RMAC, while Mines fell to 15-29, 12-22.
Bears earn GWC victory.
The Northern Colorado baseball team dominated the New Jersey Institute of Technology 12-2 for the Bears’ eighth straight victory in Great West Conference play. The Bears (16-27, 12-4) are in second place behind Utah Valley (19-19, 11-1).
Senior Chris Carlberg pitched the first complete game of his career for the Bears and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out five and walked none. Freshman catcher Matt Jones was a home run short of a cycle, as he singled in the second and fifth innings, tripled in the third and doubled in the sixth. T.J. Berge also had four hits, moving into fifth on the Bears’ all-time hits list with 198.
Roadrunners win RMAC regular-season title.
Metro State softball player Jennessa Tesone hit two home runs in the second game of a doubleheader against Nebraska-Kearney (16-29, 16-21 RMAC), giving her six for the weekend. The Roadrunners (33-14, 28-11) fell 5-4 in the first game but rebounded with a 10-7 victory in the nightcap to earn their third consecutive regular-season conference title.
The Roadrunners finished as co-champions with Colorado Mines, which finished 33-20, 28-11. The Roadrunners won the tiebreaker and will be the top seed in the RMAC Tournament, which begins Thursday in Golden.
