Are we approaching “social” overload? Following the explosive growth of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, companies rushed to hire social media directors and experts. Now businesses are tying the social tag to products that are anything but, such as vending machines. Last week, PepsiCo introduced the “social vending system,” which features touchscreen vending technology. Among the new options on this machine is the ability to “gift” a drink to a friend, who then receives a text message with a code for a beverage. The drink must be redeemed at a social vending machine. PepsiCo said it plans to test the technology later this year.
