About 10,000 people and 5,000 dogs ran through Washington Park this morning during the Denver Dumb Friends League’s 18th annual Furry Scurry,

Organizers said the event raised about $1 million for animals looking for permanent homes, but hopes to raise more, since fundraising efforts will continue until June 7.

“The Furry Scurry is a celebration of the human-animal bond, but more importantly, it increases awareness about pets in need and helps raise much-needed funds so we can continue helping these animals,” Bob Rohde, president and CEO of the Dumb Friends League, said in a news release.

The funds raised will help provide care for nearly 25,000 cats, dogs and other small animals this year.

The 2011 Furry Scurry was presented by Hill’s Science Diet, Banfield Pet Hospital, HomeAgain, King Soopers, Heartgard, Frontline and Amica Mutual Insurance Company.
