EAGLE, Colo.—Eagle County officials are preparing for potential flooding as mountain snow melts.

County officials say the amount of water in the snowpack in the Vail area is above average, and a string of days with above-average temperatures could cause rapid melting that could lead to flooding.

Last June, a late spring heat wave led to flood damage at 15 homes in Vail, and a bike bridge was damaged by high water.

The county said Monday that sheriff’s officials plan to check flood-prone areas nightly once river levels start rising. County workers also are checking culverts and watching streams.

The county says residents will be able to pick up free sand and bags at designated spots in Avon, Eagle, Gypsum, Minturn, Red Cliff and Vail to make sandbags.
