A mission proposal to land a spacecraft multiple times on a comet is one of three Discovery program ideas selected by a NASA-led team for further study.
The University of Maryland leads the Comet Hopper team that also includes Lockheed Martin Space Systems. The 2016 mission is capped at $425 million, not including launch vehicle funding. Called Comet Hopper, the spacecraft would measure how the comet changes as it interacts with the sun.
