Missy Franklin of Regis Jesuit High School smashed the event record in the 200-meter backstroke by nearly three seconds, finishing in 2:08.36 on Sunday in a win at the USA Grand Prix in Charlotte, N.C.

Franklin’s efforts caught the eye of Michael Phelps.

“She can get out and swim with anybody, and isn’t at all fazed by it,” the Olympic legend said.

Buffs end Big 12 track run.

The University of Colorado men and women’s track and field team finished eighth and 10th, respectively, at their final Big 12 track and field championships. Texas A&M won both titles.

CU’s Joe Bosshard won the 5,000 meters in 13:50.62. The Buffs’ Emma Coburn won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:57.39.

Mesa State wins RMAC baseball tourney.

Mesa State scored all of its runs with two outs and beat Nebraska-Kearney 6-5 for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball tournament championship in Grand Junction. Mesa State (33-19) and will play this week in the Central Regional of the NCAA’s Division II Tournament as the RMAC’s automatic qualifier. Nebraska-Kearney (35-17), the RMAC’s regular-season champion, also will play in the Central Regional.
