The supervisory engineer at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, who oversaw environmental cleanup activities at the arsenal, has been named project manager for the Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant in Pueblo.

Bruce Huenefeld, who lives in Arvada, was named project manager of the destruction plant by the US Army’s Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives (ACWA).

The Pueblo Chemical Depot stores 2,611 tons of mustard agent in projectiles and cartridges.

The Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant is under construction for the purpose of destroying the obsolete stockpile of the mustard agent.

ACWA has worked together with the community to select a safe technology – neutralization followed by biotreatment – to destroy the chemical weapons stored at the depot, according to the Army.

“Bruce is uniquely qualified to lead the ACWA team in Pueblo,” said ACWA Deputy Program Manager Joseph Novad. “We’re looking forward to adding his wide range of professional skills to the project.”

Prior to Huenefeld’s assignment at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, he worked at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, where he gained experience in chemical demilitarization, including systemization and pollution abatement, according to the Army.

Huenefeld holds a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Wyoming. He will join the Pueblo team in June.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com.
