One of three alleged scam artists accused of trying to defraud Chinese immigrants in Denver failed to appear in court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.
Court officials will soon issue a bench warrant for the arrest of Fuyan Li, 42, according to standard court procedures.
Authorities say Li and two accomplices posed as poor construction workers and tried to run a complicated scam involving buried gold ingots, counterfeit currency and forged documents. One woman targeted by the men said they offered her 36 pounds of fake gold in exchange for $180,000.
They were arrested April 14 on felony counts of attempted fraud and released shortly afterward on $10,000 bond each. Yanwen Yang, 46, and Dejun Xu, 45, made their Tuesday appearances in court.
