ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo.—Crews trying to clear Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park by Memorial Day are plowing their way through more than 20 feet of snow at spots.
Park officials said Tuesday that plow operators are dealing with some of the deepest snow seen along the route in years.
The road was opened for the season last year around the end of May. This year, park officials say the earliest it will likely open is May 27.
Trail Ridge is billed as the country’s highest continuously paved road. It climbs to 12,183 feet and connects the towns of Estes Park on the east side of the park with Grand Lake, on the west.
