DENVER—A sheriff’s deputy fired in January after officials say he put an inmate in a chokehold and then lied about it had been suspended twice before for using excessive force.
Denver officials released a report Tuesday detailing an investigation into Deputy Joseph Webster. Denver’s KDVR-TV obtained video of the incident and a copy of the report.
Officials say Webster received suspensions of 45 days and three days between 2004 and 2010. Video of the latest incident showed a handcuffed inmate being placed in a chokehold and wrestled to the ground by Webster.
Officials said the inmate shouted obscenities at Webster, but was never a threat. The report’s release comes about a week after Denver officials decided against disciplining five deputies who caused an inmate’s death as they struggled with him.
