When they were married, you could buy a new Hudson automobile for $723. A gallon of gas cost 12 cents. World War II was still on their horizon, and after knowing each other for just five months, Floyd and Helen knew they’d found the right person.
On Tuesday, Floyd and Helen Downing celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They’re both 91 years old, living at Garden Square of Greeley, an assisted living center.
Floyd and Helen grew up separately and never met until a friend introduced them at a dance in Hiannis, Neb., where they danced the shadish — one of the original line dances. From there, they’d go to barn dances together, and friends called them “Bub and Dani.”
