51000 Two Rivers Plaza Road, Glenwood Springs, 800-530-1635,
Why visit now: What was Colorado missing? Bungee jumping, of course — and now we have it, courtesy of Glenwood Caverns, which just opened its 70-foot free-fall tower overlooking the Roaring Fork Valley. They’ve thoughtfully provided a safety cushion at the bottom, but if you can’t look down, you can jump off feet-first or backward, or head first, if you’re feeling particularly brave. Bungee jumpers must weigh between 80 and 240 pounds. Cost: $20 per jump (does not include tram ride to park, $12 adults, $8 kid 3-12). If you’ll be at the park before Friday, it’s two-for- one jumps for Coloradans.
Stay: Glenwood Suites (2625 Gilstrap Court, 970-384-4700, ) is a great choice for families because you can choose a room with a sleeper sofa or go with a full-on suite; they have an on-site laundry and breakfast is included. Microwave, mini-fridge, and coffeemaker make Mom and Dad happy and mean you can take along snacks and store leftovers. Wi-Fi is free. The hot springs pool and Adventure Park are just minutes away. Not to mention the price is right: rates start at $80 a night.
Dine: Small but welcoming, JH Chen Asian Bistro (730 Cooper Ave., 970-945-9898) is still one of our favorite pan-Asian eateries, a kid-friendly spot that offers noodle dishes kids love and adult-friendly items such as sushi and sashimi, fried dumplings and hot-and-sour soup. The Chinese stir-fries are Szechuan-style, so look for some heat. The Thai dishes also shine. The place has the feel of a mom-and-pop shop, so expect it to get overwhelmed easily during peak times, but the staff is gracious, and the prices are very reasonable. Closed Sundays. Kyle Wagner
