One of the most- used technologies in our homes is the light switch. Few things are more disappointing in a gorgeous model home, designer show room or shelter magazine layout than a drab, contractors-grade switch plate. Avoid this common decorating pitfall by adding a touch of personality to the switch plates in your kitchen, guest bathroom, home office or kid’s room.
Directions
Step 1: Use a screwdriver to remove the switch plate from the outlet.
Step 2: Decide on your cover. This can be an old scrap of wallpaper, a funky scrapbook paper, or a favorite photo (like your wedding portrait or a picture of your child or pet).
Step 3: Trim your selected cover to a size that’s 1 inch larger than the switch plate on all four sides. Make diagonal cuts in the corners.
Step 4: Place the cover design picture-side-down on a work surface. Apply a coat of spray adhesive to the front of the switch plate.
Step 5: Center the switch plate on top of the cover, face down. Fold over the top and bottom edges. Pinch creases along each side to create crisp hospital-corner edges.
Step 6: Take the switch plate back to the outlet and hold it in place. Using a sharp crafting knife, cut out the switch opening. Then cut a small “X” into each screw hole.
Step 7: Rescrew the embellished switch plate to the wall and enjoy!
