Aspen city officials plan to spend nearly $30,000 on reusable, stainless steel water bottles and filling stations in a municipal battle against plastic water bottles.

The City Council gave the go-ahead in March to the “Aspen Tap” campaign to reduce the use of plastic water bottles. It was launched after a council member visited the Caribbean and was shocked by the amount of discarded plastic bottles floating in the ocean.

The Aspen Dally News reports the city plans to order 4,000 stainless steel water bottles. The city will give away about 1,000 bottles and then sell them at local stores.

The city also plans to have filling stations around town where people can fill their bottles with water. Officials will also ask stores for data on bottled water sales.
