Showers developed as expected over the mountains and foothills regions this afternoon. For the commute and into the evening, heavy rain and hail are possible for the metro area.

Periods of rain with a little bit of thunderstorm activity will be expected through the evening hours.

9NEWS Meteorologist Marty Coniglio says there is a slight risk for severe storms in the Denver area and along the Front Range, with large hail being the biggest potential threat. Marty also says that small funnel clouds are also possible, but the threat for tornado damage is small.

The storms are expected to be strongest from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

There is a 60 percent chance of rain overnight, the National Weather Service predicts, and the low temperature is forecast to be 46 degrees.

The cloudy skies will then stick around for a few days, with cooler temperatures, scattered showers and a few thunderstorms expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Chance of rain Tuesday is 60 percent, with a high temperature forecast to be 65 degrees.

Wednesday the Weather Service expects the high to be 63 degrees with a 30 percent chance of showers.

The heaviest rainfall is expected in northeast Colorado, which could see 2 to 4 inches between Monday night and Wednesday.

The skies are expected to clear Thursday and Friday, bringing warmer temperatures and sunshine for the Memorial Day weekend.
