Over the objections of one of his teen victims, a former Greeley teacher was ordered to spend the next several years on intensive probation and the rest of his life as a registered sex offender.
David Rangel, 29, a former teacher at Jefferson High School in Greeley, held his head in his hand throughout his 40-minute sentencing hearing Thursday in which Weld District Court Judge Julie Hoskins sentenced him to 10 years to life on sex offender intensive supervision probation, plus an additional six months in the Weld County Jail on work release.
Rangel was arrested last September after admitting to police that he had a relationship with a 16-year-old student and that he had fondled her in his classroom at Jefferson High School. The girl’s foster mother alerted police to the inappropriate contact with the girl. Afterward, a second victim came forward and accused him of having sex with her in a classroom.
“I’m deeply sorry for what I’ve done,” Rangel told the court. “I have nothing but shame and regret for my actions and my choices. I regret the victims taking any part of the blame onto themselves. It’s my fault and I take responsibility for that. I want to make things right, and if you give me a second chance to be a citizen of this community, I can promise you I won’t violate the trust of the community again.”
