A river-related tip that went unmentioned in last week’s column has to do with rafting courtesy. As a reader who spends several summer days wade-fishing the Arkansas River pointed out via e-mail: Just because you own a raft doesn’t mean you own the river.
Many new boaters either don’t understand how to navigate around anglers occupying a fishing hole or simply don’t care. But part of navigation skills includes the courtesy of giving other fishermen a wide berth. It also includes being able to float around rock shelves and low water areas so you aren’t trespassing by getting out of your boat and pushing off from someone else’s property.
DOW classroom.
The Colorado Division of Wildlife will host an introduction to fly-fishing at a private ranch in Bailey on Monday. Twenty beginners (16 and older) will receive a half-day of classroom instruction, then spend the afternoon learning hands-on fishing techniques in nearby waters. The CDOW will provide equipment for the class, although students are welcome to bring their own equipment. A valid fishing license is required, along with $20 to cover lunch and supplies. It’s free.
A heads-up that next weekend, June 4-5, is the annual free fishing weekend in Colorado. It’s the only time anglers don’t need a license to fish, although all other regulations remain in effect.
