The daunting Karsten Creek course lived up to its reputation Tuesday as Colorado State combined for a 19- over-par first round and 25th place at the 30-team NCAA men’s golf championships in Stillwater, Okla.
The Rams were led by Kory Harrell, a junior from Air Academy High School who transferred to CSU from Northern Colorado. Harrell shot a 1-over 73, which included an eagle on the par-5 first hole.
CSU’s Ryan Peterson, a senior from Eagan, Minn., shot a 5-over 77.
Two teams shot under par at Oklahoma State’s home course. Georgia Tech led the team standings with a 5-under total. UCLA was three strokes back.
Georgia Tech’s James White topped the individual leaderboard at 5-under 67. Texas A&M’s Cameron Peck was one stroke back.
Cummings staying put.
Rapids striker Omar Cummings told the Jamaican Football Federation that he won’t join its national team for the CONCACAF Gold Cup opening rounds this month and will remain with his Major League Soccer team, according to MLS.
Cummings likely would have missed at least two games with the defending MLS champion Rapids if he had played for Jamaica. “I just told them I’m not ready yet, but if they need me later, we’ll take a look then,” he told .
Rapids defender Tyrone Marshall said his call-up to the Jamaican team is in doubt too. “I want to make sure everything is good here first,” Marshall said.
Roadrunners honored.
Metro State outfielder David Fox received more Division II All-America honors with his selection to the American Baseball Coaches Association’s third team. Fox, a senior from Faith Christian High School who transferred to Metro State from Trinidad State Junior College, batted .426 this season. He had 20 doubles, eight home runs and 55 RBIs. He batted .431 a year ago for the Roadrunners.
• Metro State softball star Jennessa Tesone was selected for Daktronics All-America honorable mention. The senior outfielder from Niwot batted .396 this season. She had 14 homers, 14 doubles and 50 RBIs. She ranks fifth in D-II history with 56 career homers.
