Greenwood Village-based Red Robin Gourmet Burgers said it plans to develop and test smaller prototype restaurants as part of its expansion strategy.

The chain said it has identified several sites in metro Denver that could be suitable for the smaller outlets, which would average 2,000 to 4,000 square feet, compared with Red Robin’s 5,600-square-foot standard format. Red Robin said it plans to have at least one smaller restaurant open this year, in addition to 10 full-size restaurants to be developed in fiscal 2011.
