ST. LOUIS — The Cardinals placed one of the NL’s top winners on the disabled list Wednesday and expect the league’s best hitter to follow suit.

“Frankly, it looks like it’s getting better, but it’s still something he feels,” general manager John Mozeliak said. “It’s just not going away.”
Mauer making progress
DETROIT — Twins catcher Joe Mauer is scheduled to catch three innings today at an extended spring-training game in Fort Myers, Fla.
Manager Ron Gardenhire said Mauer, who has been out since April 14 with leg weakness and an injured right shoulder, is healthy, but he won’t play for the Twins until he’s able to catch regularly.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Angels right-hander Dan Haren cut short a throwing session in the bullpen after feeling discomfort in his lower back.
Haren will be examined before a determination is made if he will make Saturday’s scheduled start against the Yankees.
