COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT, Colo.—Colorado National Monument Superintendent Joan Anzelmo will end her 35-year career with the National Park Service when she retires July 1.

Anzelmo has been superintendent at the western Colorado site since May 2007 and coordinated the monument’s 100th anniversary celebration this year, including a New Year’s Eve fireworks display. She has served as a senior agency spokeswoman at Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, and the Park Service director in Washington, D.C.

Anzelmo was spokeswoman during the 1988 fires in Yellowstone, working with media from around the world. She helped handle the Park Service’s response to the Gulf oil spill last year. She helped plan and coordinate several presidential visits to various national parks.

Anzelmo plans to live in Jackson, Wyo.
