Powderhorn ski resort announced today it will go up for sale at auction later this summer. The resort, located near Grand Junction on the Grand Mesa, will be auctioned on Aug. 4.
It will be an absolute auction, meaning no minimum bid. Powderhorn, which has two main lifts and two smaller lifts, has 1,600 skiable acres (600 groomed acres and 44 trails).
“We’re excited for what the future of Powderhorn can be,” CEO and president of Powderhorn Steve Bailey said in a statement. “On behalf of the current ownership and staff, we are looking forward to the transition for this gem of Western Colorado.”
Bailey is one of the primary owners of the resort. The resort has passed through a few owners since it opened in 1966.
The J.P. King Auction Company, which is based in Alabama, is in charge of the sale. Though they’ve been around since 1915, it’s believed to be their first ski resort on the block.
“We get a lot of unique properties,” said J.P. King communications manager Caley Newberry, whose great-great grandfather founded the company in 1915. “We’ve sold a raceway and a winery before, but I don’t know that we’ve ever sold a ski resort.”
