In the past several years, a number of tour players have been using a mix of cavity-back and straight-blade irons. The obvious advantage is greater control and more accuracy in the scoring zone. Now, three of the leading brand names are offering combination or combo sets. Cobra, Nike and Adams all put a lot of stock and treasure into this concept.
Combos come in essentially two forms. The traditional set features cavity-back long and middle irons, with straight blades comprising the short irons. A more hybrid combo features just that, hybrids in place of long and in some cases even mid-irons, with traditional short irons. The hybrid combo models are potentially the best thing to happen to the great majority of higher handicap, senior and women golfers since hybrids first appeared on the scene 15 years ago. They retail from $599 to $899 per set.
