Traffic investigators in Colorado Springs are seeking the public’s help in finding a driver who left the scene of a fatal crash.

The crash happened at about 10 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Rangewood and Randall drives, according to a Colorado Springs Police Department media release.

Two motorcycles were heading south on Rangewood when a metallic green Dodge Neon sedan made a left turn in front of the bikes.

“Both motorcycles were unable to avoid a collision and crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle,” police said. The driver of the Neon fled west on Randall Drive through a shopping center.

A motorcycle driver who died in the crash has been identified as Christopher Wheeler, 19, of Boston, Mass. Wheeler was a specialist in the U.S. Army assigned to Fort Carson. His company had just returned from a tour in Iraq, police said.

Another motorcycle driver and a woman who was a passanger were taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries that are not life-threatening, police said.

Police said the Neon is a 1998 or 1999 model with large decorative, decal graphics on the passanger side. The car has severe impact damage on the rear passanger side and is missing the fuel tank cover.

The car also has a damaged front window and side marker light, it may also be leaking fluid from the under carriage.

Anyone with information on the crash or a possible suspect vehicle or driver is asked to call police at 719 444-7000.
