GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The suspect in the killing of a man at a homeless camp in Grand Junction allegedly told investigators he struck the victim repeatedly with a hatchet after the victim attacked him and his girlfriend.

The Daily Sentinel reports 46-year-old Richard Nelson was killed last week at a transient camp near the Colorado River. Forty-seven-year-old Daniel Scott Warner is being held on a $250,000 bond on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The affidavit says Warner told officers he and his girlfriend had been sleeping in a tent when Nelson allegedly started punching at it with his fists, striking them multiple times in the face. Warner allegedly said he then grabbed a hatchet and started swinging at Nelson.

Warner is due to be formally charged Tuesday.
