El Olvido 2200 S. Broadway, 720-422-9217, . Open 11 a.m.-9 p.m., seven days.
The look: It’s not the prettiest building on South Broadway, but there’s plenty of parking, and once you’re inside, you’ll find the dining room comfortable and spacious.
On the menu: Don’t come here looking for nachos and combo plates; El Olvido chef Jorge Pingarron has assembled an eclectic, short menu of elevated Mexican fare, including red snapper tacos and the house specialty, carne in su jugo, which is like a zingy, filling beef soup. Queso fundido is luxurious and filling; order it with a chorizo topper. Chicken wings with an avocado sauce are also favorites among locals. House margaritas are big, cool and refreshing, as are refreshing virgin drinks like horchata and jamaica (hibiscus) sodas. Although the logo incorporates a wine glass into its design, there’s not much wine on the list. Prices are relatively reasonable; one recent dinner for three people, including drinks, appetizers and entrees came in at about $50 with tip.
The vibe: So far, this month- old restaurant (formerly the home of South Broadway Grill and several other also-ran restaurants) has been quiet and approachable, and never over-populated. The room is dark and the staff is friendly (sometimes effusive), both of which contribute to the all-around relaxed atmosphere.
When to visit: Lunchtime is a quiet affair; come during the evening to mingle with neighborhood locals. As summer progresses, look for more action on the patio.
