NEW YORK — Nationals pitcher Jason Marquis and Diamondbacks reliever Esmerling Vasquez were suspended for throwing at hitters during Sunday’s game after both teams were warned.
Marquis was penalized five games and fined an undisclosed amount Tuesday by Major League Baseball. Vasquez was suspended three games and also fined. Both pitchers appealed and can play until the process is complete.
Managers Jim Riggleman of the Nationals and Kirk Gibson of the Diamondbacks were each suspended for one game and fined.
• Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon was suspended three games for making contact with umpire Tony Randazzo during Saturday’s game against the Athletics. Papelbon, who also was fined an undisclosed amount, is appealing.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left New York’s game against Boston in the first inning with a bruised right knee after being hit by a pitch from Jon Lester. X-rays were negative, and Teixeira will be re-evaluated today.
• The Red Sox activated shortstop Marco Scutaro (oblique) and sent right-hander Scott Atchison to Triple-A Pawtucket. Also, Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks (back) is day to day.
• The Athletics placed left-hander Brett Anderson (elbow) and second baseman Mark Ellis (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled second baseman Jemile Weeks and left-hander Bobby Cramer from Triple-A Sacramento.
• The Angels activated outfielder Vernon Wells (groin).
• The Pirates designated reliever Jose Ascanio for assignment and recalled left-hander Tony Watson from Triple-A Indianapolis.
• Cardinals right fielder Allen Craig was injured at Houston after running into a barrier trying to catch a foul ball.
