Getting your player ready...

Rapids star striker Omar Cummings returned to practice Tuesday in Commerce City, his first action since severely spraining his right ankle in a game May 4.

“It’s good to finally be on the field again,” Cummings said. “But I’m still taking it slow, just seeing where I’m at.”

Colorado travels to Portland for an 8:30 p.m. game against the Timbers on Saturday. Cummings remains questionable. Rapids coach Gary Smith said he is confident that Cummings would be on the team’s traveling roster. In the season opener, Cummings scored an unassisted goal in the Rapids’ 3-1 rout of Portland.

“I’m not where I want to be,” Cummings said. “Some good signs, but still some nagging turns and shooting. I’m definitely not ready yet.”

Cummings had an MRI on May 9 that showed a partial torn ligament in his right ankle. He’s missed six games, all ties, as the Rapids scored just five goals over the stretch.

“He looks confident,” Smith said. “He doesn’t look like he’s missed a beat physically. He’s very fortunate he’s such a good athlete. Unlike most of us, he doesn’t put any weight on and he looks after himself very well.”
