A two-car collision in Elbert County sent a sedan careening through a row of mail-collection boxes and into a vacant store in a busy strip mall today, the Elizabeth Police Department said.

Both drivers were taken to local hospitals, but their names and conditions were not released.

The crash happened at Colorado Highway 86 near Elbert County Road 17 at about 10 a.m. One of the cars traveled “several hundred yards” before hitting the store in the Countryside Village Shopping Center, police said.

“With the amount of activity in the shopping center and the damage to the building it is very fortunate that more people were not injured,” Elizabeth Police Chief Mike Phibbs said in a statement.

The cause of crash is under investigation.
