Sporting News’ 2011 College Football magazine picked Colorado to finish fifth among six teams in the Pac-12 South Division this season, ahead of UCLA, whose coach is former CU coach Rick Neuheisel.
The league’s other newcomer, Utah, was picked by Sporting News to win the South, followed in order by Arizona State, Southern California and Arizona.
Sporting News picked Stanford as the North Division champion, followed in order by Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, California and Washington State.
Sporting News picked LSU as the nation’s No. 1 team, chased in order by Oklahoma, Alabama, Stanford, Oregon, Boise State, Florida State, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Nebraska.

AFA steeplechaser advances.
Air Force’s Justin Tyner advanced to the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase finals at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
Tyner, a senior from Baxter, Minn., ranked ninth among 24 in the semifinals. He runs again Friday.
Air Force’s James Cole, a junior from Bozeman, Mont., placed 24th in the discus with a throw of 164 feet, 6 inches. Noah Palicia, an AFA senior from Stoneboro, Pa., was 24th after the first five events of the decathlon.
Moore, Austin team up for CWGA title.
Janet Moore and Christie Austin of Cherry Hills Country Club defeated defending champions Kim Eaton of Riverdale Golf Course and Melissa Martin of Bookcliff Country Club 2 and 1 at The Country Club at Castle Pines and won the CWGA Mashie Championship. Moore’s birdie on No. 17 clinched the victory.
Jorgensen joins DU coaching staff.
The University of Denver women’s lacrosse team hired Alivian Coates Jorgensen, a former James Madison All-American, as an assistant coach. Jorgensen will be the Pioneers’ midfield coach and recruiting coordinator. She most recently was head coach at St. Mary’s Academy in suburban Denver.
Lubbers now leads Colorado Christian.
Kevin Lubbers is the new men’s basketball coach at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood. Lubbers coached a conference championship team in his two seasons at Trinity Christian College near Chicago. Colorado Christian’s 7-20 record last season included a 6-16 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games.
