FRISCO, Colo.—Forest Service officials are closing several unmanaged Summit County trails this summer.
Dillon Ranger District spokesman Ken Waugh says the user-created trails often become unmaintained ruts where runoff can affect water quality and fisheries.
Affected trails include several miles in the Golden Horseshoe area in Breckenridge and about three miles in the Frey Gulch Road area on Tenderfoot Mountain near Keystone.
The Summit Daily says closing the trails includes breaking up the soil to facilitate regrowth as well as installing diversions to keep water from running freely downhill. Debris and logs are dragged in to block them from traffic.
