Denver City Council voted 9-0 Monday night to increase employees’ contributions to their pensions but delayed voting on other, more drastic changes to the city retirement system, on which they were divided.

Monday’s vote means that beginning Jan. 1, the contribution rate to the Denver Employees Retirement Plan will rise from 15 percent to 16.5 percent. Employees will put 6.25 percent of their salary to retirement, compared with 5.5 percent now. Employers will contribute 10.25 percent compared with the 9.5 percent they give now.

The council voted 6-3 Monday night to delay voting by one week on more controversial changes to the city retirement system. Councilwoman Carol Boigon and Councilman Paul Lopez were both out of town.
