NEW YORK — Derek Jeter’s final push for 3,000 hits is on hold.
The Yankees put their star shortstop on the 15-day disabled list for the first time since 2003 because of a strained right calf, making the move before Tuesday night’s 12-4 victory over the Rangers.
Jeter limped off the field Monday night against the Indians, four innings after he got his 2,994th hit.
“I guess the timing wasn’t very good,” Jeter said. “It’s a little bit frustrating. But even if I wasn’t at this point, I’d still be frustrated. I don’t like not to play. Whether it’s going for 3,000 hits or 100 hits, I’d rather be out there playing.”
Infielder Ramiro Peña was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Also, starter Phil Hughes took another step forward in his rehabilitation program for a shoulder injury, throwing 50 pitches against minor-leaguers in a camp game. His fastball reached 93 mph and averaged around 91.
