Dr. John Torres talked allergies and discussed why they seem to be so bad this year with Dr. Rohit Katial, Allergist at National Jewish Health on Wednesday.

According to Katial, allergies do seem to be worse right now for a few reasons. We are now in the “grass” pollen season, so people that tend to suffer more from grass-type allergies will be feeling worse this time of the year. Early in the springtime, “tree” pollens were more prevalent, and later in the year it will be the “weed-type” pollens that will cause a flare up of allergy symptoms.

Add to that the dry and very windy weather we’ve been experiencing, and you can start to see why your allergy symptoms might now be worse than most years. On top of all this, we are also experiencing a great deal of particulates in the air because of smoke from fires in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. These air particles can combine with the pollens already in the air this time of the year and give your allergies a double whammy.
