DURANGO, Colo.—La Plata County has passed a ban on commercial-sized medical marijuana growing operations in homes.

County commissioners on Tuesday said they wanted to make sure homeowners are protected from side effects of the growing medicinal marijuana industry.

The Durango Herald says the ban applies to commercial cultivators and large caregivers that would use more than 1,000 square feet of space to grow and process the drug in their homes. However, small caregivers and patients could continue to grow the drug.

The director of an advocacy group called the ban unfair, telling commissioners it also should apply to growers of other plants.
