Federal prosecutors wrapped up their case Thursday in the criminal trial of Xcel Energy on charges of workplace-safety violations.

Xcel is on trial over the deaths of five workers killed in a 2007 fire at the Cabin Creek hydroelectric plant near Georgetown. The government argues Xcel didn’t do enough to ensure the safety of the five workers, who died after a fire ignited in a large water pipe in which they were working. If found guilty, Xcel could face stiff fines.

Xcel contends it met its safety obligations and that safety lapses were the responsibility of the workers’ employer, RPI Coating Inc.

Xcel’s attorneys expect to take at least a couple of days presenting their side. The case could go to the jury early next week.
