DENVER—Colorado will end coverage for routine circumcisions under Medicaid next month.

Opponents say there is little justification for the procedure and state officials say the state will save thousands of dollars.

The change takes effect July 1.

According to the University of Colorado’s Solutions Health Policy Website, the change is expected to save the state’s general fund $186,500 a year.

The issue has been a contentious one in California, where San Francisco is set to be the first city to hold a public vote on banning circumcision.

Supporters say male circumcision is a form of genital mutilation that parents should not be able to force on their young child.

Jewish and Muslim families are challenging that proposal in court.
