TELLURIDE, Colo.—Telluride is getting kudos from an environmental group for dropping its policy of trying to control prairie dogs on town open space and allowing the creatures to roam freely.
The Telluride Town Council voted this week to allow the prairie dogs to expand beyond their original 23-acre colony on the valley floor in the southwest Colorado mountain town. The town won’t try to contain the animals, but won’t take any steps to protect them outside the colony.
The Telluride Daily Planet reports that town officials will try to discourage the prairie dogs from roaming too far by planting trees and building perches for raptors, which prey on prairie dogs.
Telluride worked with the environmental group WildEarth Guardians on the new policy.
