BOULDER, Colo.—A 23-year-old Longmont man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for a shootout with a police officer he said he mistook for a zombie.
A judge sentenced Brandon Duke Friday for the attempted murder and first-degree assault of officer David Blake last year on Main Street in the city 35 miles north of Denver. The Longmont Times-Call reports he faced from 24 to 64 years in prison.
Duke initially entered a plea of insanity, saying he believed the officer was a zombie. He pleaded guilty after undergoing a mental health evaluation.
Authorities say the shootout began when the officer approached Duke, who was being sought on a warrant. They say Duke fled and then fired at Blake, who wasn’t hit.
Blake fired back, hitting Duke three times.
