GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Mesa County judge has ruled that probable cause exists to support criminal charges after two Colorado State Patrol troopers were indicted in the shooting death of a Redlands man.
District Judge Richard Gurley denied a motion on Thursday to throw out the indictments against trooper Ivan Lawyer and Cpl. Kirk Firko.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel says the two troopers were investigating a traffic accident when they went to the home of Jason Kemp and kicked in his door. Kemp was unarmed but Lawyer told the grand jury he saw a flash and thought he had been shot so he fired at Kemp.
