Jurors deliberating in the trial of Xcel Energy on charges of workplace-safety violations resulting in the deaths of five men ended their second day of debate today without reaching a verdict.
The jurors must decide whether Xcel faces criminal punishment for the deaths of the men, who were working inside a large pipe at an Xcel power plant near Georgetown in 2007 when a fire broke out. Trapped inside the pipe, the men died of smoke inhalation.
If convicted, Xcel and a subsidiary company could have to pay up to $5 million combined in fines.
Jurors will resume deliberations on Tuesday, to accommodate one juror’s previously planned trip.
