A man was killed and a woman was taken to the hospital Saturday morning after the man drove the wrong direction on West Sixth Avenue and crashed head-on into a sport utility vehicle.
At 10 a.m., a man driving a silver Chevy Malibu turned onto West Sixth Avenue at Garrison Street and began driving west in the eastbound lanes, according to the Lakewood Police Department.
The man continued to drive in the wrong direction for about a quarter of a mile before he collided head-on with an eastbound black Jeep Liberty.
The Jeep then crashed into a third vehicle, causing minor damage.
The woman driving the Jeep was taken to St. Anthony Hospital with minor injuries.
The wrong-way driver, who also was taken to St. Anthony’s, had serious injuries and died several hours later.
The names of the man and woman have not been released.
Police did not suspect Saturday that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
The accident was cleared, and the roadway was reopened by 12:45 p.m.
